Another Summer Song

Through ice water
My eyes caught her
I’d seen her last
The summer pastOn a bright morning
But a storm was forming
In the sky to the west
I could feel it in my chestThe stone soldier
Her eyes colder
than winter rain
a hint of bitter painMy confused failures
Suffuse and paler
Than thunderclouds
Still these summer doubts remainThrough clay ceilings we’ll be lowered down
Dust motes reeling sunlight all aroundMy eyes caught her
A size taller
Outside a tomb
That cold cocoonThe tides had called her
The frayed psalter
Was in her veins
Those ancient sweet refrains
Greg Mullersman says:
Hey Ben,
I love this song, and I love your music! I’m not a musician or any thing, but here are some thoughts. If you could tell a story that everybody could identify with that had a beginning, middle and an end where the music starts sort of soft and gentle like you normally do, and then rises, and falls towards the end back to where it started. I’m thinking that if for example you started out with say seeing an attractive woman, your eyes meet and your mind wonders off and imagines a relationship with her and going through the joy of the relationship …, and then coming back to where you are say you drop your head and continue walking by her or something like that.
Just some silly thoughts. Take care and I wish you a Happy New Year, and much LUCK,
Greg
Ben says:
Thanks for the thoughts Greg. I think I may understand what you’re getting at. Writing songs that people can relate to is certainly one of my goals. It’s a balance that is worth considering that a song should be something people can relate to and at the same time something that challenges and spurs people to think from different angles. Happy New Year to you.
Matt Steen says:
Man Ben, this is a great, great song! Definitely a keeper. The lyrics are fantastic and I love that banjo part. Man, I listen to that and I want to see the situation go down.
